Gotta Get Outta Here single
Hansom Pilot |
Fawlty Towers only ran for two series. The Sex Pistols only made one proper album. You can demolish a StarBar in three bites if you’re really hungry. Very often, it seems, some of the most enjoyable things in life don’t stick around for too long. The same is true of “Gotta Get Outta Here.” The debut single from London five-piece Hansom Pilot shakes its pointed poppy moneymaker for a mere two minutes, fifty-nine seconds.
It’s a good job, then, that it grabs you by the scruff of the earlobe from the very first note. It’s a knicker-tight, heady concoction of sparse beats and plinky synth reminiscent of the Mystery Jets’ day-glo pop. And while it’s as shiny and enticing as a brand new leather sofa, it sets itself aside from the common or garden ‘80s-inflected indie tune of the moment thanks to the frisky vocals of Clare Devaney. Mixing the robotitis of Hazel O’Connor with the zippy gutsiness of Gabriella Cilmi, she helps transform this from merely a killer three minute pop tune into a marshmallow of hope in these gloomy times.
“Everytime We Kiss” follows up this bit of pop alchemy by practically deserving double A-side status. Starting off with a flute-driven intro that hints at a martial arts movie love theme, the song quickly fractures into skin-crawling neuroses as Clare admits “you push my buttons in all the wrong ways.” The edgy beats wade into big dirty choruses and swaggering “do-doo-doos”. It’s gripping stuff that’s suggests a lot of great ideas could pop up over the course of an album. But from this single alone, it’s clear that Hansom Pilot can do even the strangest of things in style.
