Nice man, nasty sound.
This man’s Overplay page may make him look like the nicest singer/songwriter you could ever meet, but don’t be fooled. One listen to “The Perfect Circle”, for instance, tells you John’s a production magician with a mean streak.Heavy, hypnotic beats come on like a one-man Kasabian and the feverish vocal feels like the Goth Neil Tennant. John Finch Rock 'n Roll...
Burton Upon Trent. One of those nondescript Midlands towns where nothing much ever happens.
Home to Marmite, Bass Bitter, and Bovril. Oh, and Burton Albion FC, recently promoted to the football league, whilst buoyed up by an association with Nottingham Forest and Derby County legend, Brian Clough's son Nigel. Oh, and early 1990's band, The Telescopes. They were signed to Creation you know - home to Oasis and Primal Scream. More recently, The Leisure Society make waves, oh and actor Paddy Considine and Director Shane Meadows...only he came from Uttoxeter.
You see, it's all about associations in Burton. You have to put the time in, do the spade work, make the connections, recognise the links....join the dots. That's what John Finch is all about - joining the dots - making it happen - taking the inspiration from wherever, whatever - to make something truly his own.
John came from Nowhere. He played in a couple of bands when he was at school, even had the screaming fans to prove it. But John always wanted to give himself the time to develop, and get an environment in which to nurture his music. John could only have come along in the current climate. Recording at home, and fully utilising the new recording technology now available to those are prepared to learn and open their minds, John takes beloved infleunces, namely Radiohead, Blur, Young Knives, QOTSA, and moulds them into something special.
I could go on, but I won't. John Finch is a paradox. Remember when you discovered a new band, and you went out and bought the record? Obsessively read the credits, looked at the pictures? John aims to bring that special intimate cottage industry type experience into the digital medium. "Music is for everyone" he says. "I have no pretences - if I like something, I like something. I just enjoy it, and I hope that my passion comes through and lets the listener enjoy it too - it's really that simple".
It simply really is.
Leave any preconceptions at the door please...and just listen. It's music. Great music. Do yourself a favour.
It's not where you're from, it's where you're at.

'This is the first competition I have entered and to have come 4th is an unbelievable achievement. I wish to thank all that voted for me and to Overplay for giving me this opportunity.
