The Spotlight Kid’s inspirations are broad and uncompromised. His songwriting is a hybrid of lyrical and melodic inspirations from folk artists such as Nick Drake, fused with contemporary songwriters such as Jim O’Rourke and Thom Yorke.
In 2006 Eric Mtungwazi embarked on his career as a solo artist using the moniker The Spotlight Kid, (name taken from an album title in his record collection) culminating in solo performances in the UK and Holland. This year The Spotlight Kid will feature as part of Chepstow’s Two Rivers Folk Festival 2007 and he has also been selected for The Hospital Club Mentoring Award Scheme 2007, to support emerging talent in the UK creative industries, lending further support to his growing reputation as a newcomer to watch out for this year.
Born in London, Eric first developed his composition and performance through learning the piano and guitar as a child in which he is self taught. His instrumental compositions later led to a passion for songwriting which developed as frontman for his former band ‘Tendai’. The band performed around the London circuit in 2004/5 during which highlights included performances at The Borderline, The Metro Cub, Dublin Castle and City Showcase 2005 as part of Xfm Radio Indie/Alternative Rock night.
Recent media coverage about The Spotlight Kid includes: London Tonight (TV), BBC London (TV), Time Out, Pulse Rated Radio, Overplay, SW1 Radio and South London Press.
Studio recordings are also currently available to listen to and download on his website. A studio EP will be available to buy later in the year. The Spotlight Kid can be seen performing live throughout the year in the UK at venues such as The Regal Room, Acoustic Club, The Bedford, 12 Bar Club and Electroacoustic Club.
